What is Dry January?

First off, Happy New Year

Did you wake up sick and hungover on January 1?

If yes, are you starting to feel a little tired of being sick and tired, or maybe it's not that serious yet, but you feel as if you just might need a break?

Let me tell you a little about Dry January.

Dry January started as a health campaign promoting temperance from alcohol for the entire month to encourage experiencing the mental, physical, and financial gains received from not drinking.

An excellent way to jumpstart your life into the new year.

Why would anyone want to do this?

Well, some of the health benefits already make it a pretty attractive challenge; weight loss, better-looking skin, lowered blood pressure and quality sleep.

Add a bit of economic ease to your wallet during what can be a cash-strapped time for some; many try it out to save or conserve money.

Another benefit to giving Dry January a shot is to see what being sober might look like for you, yes YOU!!

Especially if you or anyone close to you has had any concerns about your alcohol consumption, but you're not quite "there" yet to seek professional help for alcoholism.

Okay, now you're probably thinking if someone wanted to give this a try, how?

Well, switching things up for a bit by substituting new and fun activities during times you would typically drink is a great way to start.

Testing out new physical activities is a fabulous way to complement the physical benefits your body will already be experiencing during this alcohol-free period.

Oh, and since your mental clarity enhances, looking into strengthening your spirituality (no matter what you believe or don't believe) is another great idea too.

Also, why not set a savings challenge with the money you'll be saving from not picking up the bar tab for the next 30 days.

Pick something you'd like based on what you'd typically spend on alcohol and put those funds aside to get it. You'll be surprised what a little inner competition with yourself can amount to.

Attempting Dry January seems pretty straightforward, but it can be easier said than done.

If sticking to your sober month becomes a struggle, keep in mind that you don't have to go through this alone.

Be very open with those in your social circle about your intentions to participate in this challenge. You don't have to tell anyone your reasons for not drinking unless you want to and can still receive much-needed support.

Avoid people, places or things that you associate with drinking, and don't be afraid to reach out for free support online, especially if cravings become an issue.

And lastly, don't beat yourself up if you try out Dry January but end up having a drink anyways. It's okay; a slip-up doesn't mean all is lost.

You can start again and use the slip-ups as motivation to complete it this time (or however many times it takes).
